Monthly Mosaic - January

Chelle from magnetised by life created a fun flickr group for those that love to create mosaics with photos. This year she's changed it up a bit and giving a monthly color and theme to focus on. For January the color was dark red and the theme was health & commitment. I'll be honest I'd taken a few shots through the month with those in mind but when it came time to put it into a mosaic I was just looking for anything red. lol. I'm using my lack of mobility as an excuse and frankly it's a valid one.

"Falling on my head like a memory." That Eurythmics song always pops in my head when it's raining. Do you have a favorite song about the rain that you find yourself humming when the drops fall?

Finally. It's been so dry and sunny I hardly believed the date on my calendar. Nearly 70 degrees in January? It's been nice but our snow bunnies craving the slopes and our farmers needing to earn are rejoicing today because the rain has finally come. Of course it came on my birthday weekend but I'm not doing much this year so let it rain. I'll sit here by the fire sipping coffee and stay warm.

See me in the reflections below? Yes, I am counting these towards my 52 self portrait project In The Picture. It's my first week back to work so I haven't had much time or energy to put any real effort into this yet. I'm going to spend some time this weekend on coming up with something a little better than my reflection.

...about me and probably could care less but I don't have much to say these days so maybe this is total filler fluff and I should spare you the 1.78 minutes you may waste reading this.

Wow. I do I sound cranky or what?

1) I despise tomatoes but I like ketchup and marinara sauce.
2) My nostrils flare when I'm irritated.
3) My relaxed mouth is a natural pout which causes people passing me to say "it's ok to smile" and I hate it.
4) I had my septum pierced for a very brief time.
5) I haven't been to the dentist in like 5 years.
6) I've read the entire Twilight series 4 times, don't judge me.
7) I cry very easily. I blame my mother, I inherited her faulty tear ducts.
8) What I miss most about my youth is my friendships.
9) My son's middle name is Lundy after my gpa and my middle name is June after my gma.
10) I care too much what people think about me.

I have a much needed hair appointment tomorrow.
Perhaps that will brighten my mood.

each day I'm putting a little more pressure on it. I can actually stand up with no assistance and equal pressure on both feet. It's progress.

Grandma got E this adorable kids cooking set complete with hat, mixing bowl, measuring cups, and all kinds of cooking utensils. He wanted to make a cake but with all the left over sweets already in the house we settled on eggs.

Lot's of fun times in the kitchen ahead with these I am sure. It's just too cute.

It's all a blur....

2011 went so fast. I browse through my folders of photos from the past year and I can't believe how much my boy has grown, how many components of my life have changed, and how many beautiful moments were experienced. It was a good year.

2012 is a bit blurry too...

I don't know what the new year holds, none of us do. That only adds to the excitement for what's in store. I hope it's a great year for all of us.

Thank you to each of you that read this lil blog o' mine. I enjoy the connections I've made here just as much as the creative outlet it has become for me. The support, inspiration, and just general kindness I have found through this blog has exceeded my expectations. To each of you reading this, thank you. And I wish for you a wonderful 2012.

I got some alone time to play with my new toy today.

I hinted via pinterest for this Ring Flash Adapter and got it for Christmas (thank you baby!) I'm sure I won't use it for many portrait sessions which is why I didn't want to get the more expensive Ring Flash, but I do like the softer light and the cool reflections in the eyes it creates.

It's a "just for fun" toy.

And I was having fun playing with it for sure.

Speaking of self portraits Christy of Urban Muser is putting together a community self portrait project called In The Picture. I have never been shy in front of the camera but I find it very difficult to "shoot blind" in a way (with out my eye in the viewfinder.) I want to take the time to come up with a concept, create it, and shoot it with out having to delete 100 shots before I click one that is acceptable. I am hopeful this project will help inspire and give me the much needed practice to reach this goal.

So... I'm excited. Something to look forward to in 2012.

Being reminded

After stuffing ourselves with yummy deep dish pizza at Zelda's downtown my family and I were out front saying our goodbyes when he approached us with guitar in hand. Knowing my son's love for guitar my dad asked if he could play...with his thick accent he said he'd been playing for years.

He got down on one knee and played a beautiful song for us.

My son was delighted.

I don't know his story, but I'm sure it's a fascinating one.

We are always being reminded to be grateful for our blessings, to be kind to others, and not to underestimate anyone.

Rolling in someone else's shoes

It's too true that we take so much for granted.

After over 4 weeks with out being able to walk I'm getting a small glimpse of what life is like for so many. I find myself looking for the paraplegic signs to know where I can find a ramp to access the sidewalk and steering clear of the places I know I can't squeeze my wheel chair in between the isles. I have probably said "excuse me" more in the last month than I have all year, not that I don't mind my manners but I usually just move myself around the oblivious person in front of me which is not so easy these days. I find myself asking for help from strangers to hold open doors and I'm pleasantly surprised when they do it with out me having to ask... and seriously annoyed when they don't. I have rearranged the floor plan of several shop displays in order to get to the item I'm shopping for, sorry folks, but mama's gotta shop.

It's a new perspective. One I am beyond grateful is only temporary for me.
I have a new found respect for those that have to spend their lives always looking up to people, depending on the kindness of strangers to get out the door, having kids constantly stare (which doesn't bother me much but only because I have a young one that is just as curious,) and miss out on antique stores because they are just way too cramped. I never noticed before that on the short walk to the park in our neighborhood there are no ramps on and off the sidewalks. So I had to wheel in the street and pray the cars saw me.

The plus outside of the fact I should be walking again in 2 weeks is I may end up with some serious forearm muscles when it is all over.

E and I were watching Pinocchio and he was holding fairly still
so I took the opportunity to hoist myself on the
ground and snap some of his sweet face reacting to the movie.

It may not look like it, but I do enjoy the Disney classics.

Parade of lights

My boy was in his first parade this weekend. Sutter Creek, an adorable old gold country town about an hour away from us, held it's annual Parade of Lights on Saturday night. I'd never been to this quaint little town but I will be returning with out a cast and wheel chair to hit the tiny boutiques and antique stores.

The Railroad club my dad participates in had a float and he and my boy got to ride and wave in. Elijah was overjoyed! I was propped up on a balcony, freezing my feet off, but I was able to get a great view and snap a few shots of his enormous smile!

The parade was so fun. A small town feel but with a nice size crowd, lot's of friendly smiles and just an overall wonderful vibe through the entire event. I'm so glad we were able to go and even more excited for E's experience.

The window light got me off the couch

From my domain on the couch I spotted E playing with his train in a lovely patch of window light spilling into the kitchen.
The light was so sweet I had to...
I slung my camera around my neck, grabbed my crutches and hobbled over.

These are all SOC.
I started to convert them into b/w because of his attire.
You can see he's dressing himself these days.
Those yellow sweats are a favorite of his even though they are 2 sizes too small. The warm light and his warm skin didn't remain in the b/w so I left them as is.

In other news:

I had my check in earlier this week and got a new cast. They let you pick a color and I chose blue because it's my son's favorite. One of my super cool, creative girlfriends had a vision of cookie monster and came over to bring it to fruition.

The result: Coolest Cast Ever.

Pro's and Con's

The pro's of being in recovery over the holidays are:

1)It's cold out so I'm not sweating up a storm under this cast and I don't mind being stuck under my down comforter.

2) There is no "get stressed out over the Christmas madness" option.

3) Being home to enjoy every moment of the anticipation a 4 year old has for Christmas. I'm cherishing it.

The con's of being in recovery overy the holidays are:

1) I CAN'T TAKE PHOTOS!!!

It's slightly torturous.

I had my first check in since surgery and I got to see my incisions...ew.

I have a shiny new (blue) cast and a better understanding of what my surgery consisted of. The surgeon said "that was hard, take care of your recovery because I don't want to do it again!"

Neither do I Dr. Lee, neither do I.

We enjoyed a yummy meal at my aunties and followed that up with a trip to the movies with Devin and his girls. I have been looking forward to the Muppet's movie since I first saw the preview for it but I didn't expect it to be so good!
I loved it.
I grew up watching these goofy puppets and was brought back to my childhood and treated to unexpected modern humor. Did I already say I loved it? :) After everyone said their good-bye's and good-night's I popped on the laptop and started searching out Black Friday deals online. I managed to get pretty much all of my Christmas shopping done by 2am this morning.
Getting good deals in my PJ's on the couch with out standing in any lines or getting a beat down was fun.

I won't lie and say being stuck in this cast isn't sort of putting a down side to my holiday's this year. I have my moments of self pity, even on Thanksgiving, for not being able to move around and join the bustle and photograph the memories being made. I know it's silly to feel sorry for myself. I have SO MUCH to be thankful for and I am, very thankful.

My new baby arrived. I'm dying to get out and play with it. I did hobble out to the backyard on my crutches for a few minutes just to get a feel for it. It's going to take practice. I haven't used manual focus in over a decade.

I finally got off the couch and out of the house today for the first time since the surgery last Monday. Where did I venture out to enjoy my first taste of freedom?

Why Target of course. :)

My 10 year old niece has the adorable Harajuku Mini clothes at Target on her wish list but they aren't available online. Since I love that she's into these stylish clothes I've got to get her some for Christmas so we hauled the wheelchair to Target and did a little Christmas shopping.

Ahhhhh. I needed that.

One week down....

One week down 5 to 7 more to go.

Yes, my booty is getting fatter and flatter from sitting on it all day every day.
Especially when I'm sent chocolate covered strawberries and dark chocolate truffles. Yes, I am spoiled and so are my taste buds.

We all enjoyed "Up." I made it through the whole film with out crying!
"Bolt" and the Classic "Peter Pan" should arrive tomorrow.
In the mean time E sits on my lap and streams Scooby-Doo while I snap pictures of his sweet face. I am so grateful I can still hold my boy with a cast.

OK...

Maybe you are one of those people that win raffles and prizes and contests but I am not. I NEVER win anything cool, to the point that I rarely enter drawings or contests cuz that sort of thing just doesn't happen for me. But a few weeks back Shutter Sisters (who rule) were having a drawing on their blog and giving away a lensbaby. I have been admiring these cool lenses for a while and have had one hanging out in my Amazon wish list. So I figured what the heck. And what do you know I won!!! The gift card arrived and I ordered the Composer Pro with Sweet 35 lens. Ooooo I can't wait till my new baby arrives!

Last week I was driving into work in awe of the beautiful fall colors surrounding me and I posted a status on FB wishing out loud that I had a photo shoot that weekend. I didn't really expect to have not one but two families reply wanting to book right away!

Be careful what you wish and pray for! :)

I tried my best to get both booked but was only able to get one scheduled then only after a few poses into the shoot I rolled my ankle and we had to postpone the rest. I felt awful. For one we were at her parents new property which is STUNNING. I was literally giddy with all the beautiful scenery and ideas were just starting to flow when my ankle betrayed me. Fortunately they are one of the sweetest couples you'll ever meet and graciously insisted we reschedule when I have recovered. I made them promise we would come back to there to finish the shoot. I did manage to get a few good ones that I hope will make the cut for a Christmas card for this adorable couple.

Thanks again Kristin and J for the opportunity and understanding (and the ice!) This shoot is too be continued and I can't wait to finish!

Today Elijah and I will watch "Up." We've never seen it. I've stocked my Netflix queue with Disney movies for us to watch together while I recover.
I love Netflix.

I've been spending these hours on the couch editing a lot of photos taken over the past couple weeks.
I love my laptop.

The pain has increased over the last couple days. I love pain meds.

My mom has been an awesome nurse. She helped me get a shower yesterday which resulted in standing water all over her bathroom floor. She said "well at least I'm getting my bathroom floor cleaned."

In Recovery

I survived my first surgery.

I wasn't nervous till we got near the freeway exit heading towards the hospital yesterday afternoon. I'd been anxious, especially because I wasn't able to eat all day and by 2pm I just wanted to have the surgery so I could wolf down a cheeseburger or something, but the nerves didn't kick in till the hospital was in sight. Everything went well. The hardest part was the IV, I'm not a fan of needles and that stinks for a girl with "hard to find veins." I got pretty queasy after the 4th try. 2nd guy making the attempt asked me if I was going to my happy place since I was starring off into space, I graciously said "yes" and didn't confess that I was cursing him out in my head. Once the sleepy time meds hit my bloodstream I have no idea what the next 3 hours consisted of. The Dr. told my mom and Devin what he'd accomplished. I guess my tendon was hanging on by a thread and I had enough bone fragments and spurs to make a golf ball out of. Ew.

Now the fun part. Remote control, Laptop, Vicodin, and pillows.

Seriously, could my cast BE any bigger??

Elijah is being so loving and sweet. Wanting to be by my side. I had to snap a couple pictures of my little caretaker with the dried milk on his face.

A Fall in Fall

Oh fall.

You've arrived in full force and I am amazed and inspired by every rich color.

I kept my camera in hand this weekend so I'd have some photos to edit and work on while I am unable to get around, the colors around here are so beautiful and inspiring. I'm so grateful for the chance to spend a little time just hanging with my boy and my camera. It is my happy place.

So...
I was out today doing a fun couple photo shoot at an amazing location and rolled my ankle again. Skinned my knee up good. I swear I can't wait to have this ankle fixed! I just hope the swelling of today's event doesn't give them reason to postpone my procedure. It's such a dumb ankle, I can zumba but don't get me walking on gravel. This is the second time this ankle has caused me to drop my new camera. Stupid, blasted, confounded ankle. I'm just glad this sweet couple insisted we stop and agreed to reschedule when I recover.

Tomorrow is surgery day. I'll take prayers if you're the type to give them.

First off thank you from the bottom of my heart to every Veteran. Words seem a weak response to all you've done for this country.
It's what I've got so... Thank You.

I've been spending the morning enjoying my freedom before I'm captive of the couch for 2 months. I'm losing my surgery V-card and having an ankle procedure on Monday. I sincerely hope it does the trick and I'm able to run and jump and wear heels again.

I went to my first Zumba class last weekend. I'm hopping on the Zumba bandwagon a little late but what fun! I went again this morning and liked it even more. Once I'm healed up, I expect I'll be hitting a class every weekend at least.

After Zumba Elijah and I had a date to get some breakfast and go see Dolphin Tale. His obsession with Whales and Dolphins doesn't seem to be going away soon. But the flick was no longer playing at the theater so we saw Puss n Boots. It was alright. I can't wait for the Muppet movie to come out. Now that's a cast of characters I am looking forward to sharing with my boy!

I'm writing this by a warm fire, the ground outside still wet from the rain we had today. I think a cup of hot cocoa would just make this moment perfect. Hope you're all doing something to make this special day extraordinary.

What about the animals?

On our last day in Namibia we got to spend the day driving through the Etosha National Park. Etosha is a HUGE wildlife sanctuary where we were able to drive around and spot these majestic creatures in their natural environment. Of course, I took an insane number of pictures.

Gameros Family Session 2011

I was blessed to be asked to do another family portrait session for the Gameros Family. Last time we had such a great time and an insane number of shots made the final cut because I just couldn't choose. In the past year I've learned to be a little more cut throat in my selections.

I'm still learning and growing.

The day of the shoot was a crazy one. I forgot where I'd parked my car at the arena that afternoon and spent an hour wandering around in the heat watching the light disappear and freaking out I wouldn't find it in time to make the shoot! Once I finally found it (thank you Amy for coming to drive me around) I was covered in sweat and all kinds of flustered but I made it up the hill to their home before the sun set and because this family is such a hoot we managed to get some great shots.

These two sisters couldn't be more different when it comes to being in front of the camera. One loves to pose and the other would rather be anywhere but taking family photos. Just letting them be goofy and have fun got the best smiles, in fact little miss "Are we done yet?" turned out to also be little miss "I love to crack up" and I loved all of her genuine smile photos.

Church in Africa

We went to tent services at night as well as Sunday morning service at the church where we stayed. During the worship hour(s) The young people would get into groups and take turns up front in a sort of African line dancing.

It was beyond cool.

On Sunday service every nearby village had a choir and we were treated to a performance by each. Wow. Of course I expected the music to be awesome but I was literally brought to tears by the sound of their voices. There is a quality to the voice of Africa that is wise, haunting, beautiful, and not like anything else I've ever heard. Unfortunately I never did figure out how to get my camera into video mode which I'm still kicking myself for because I never want to forget that sound. God may have created a dry and harsh land in Africa but He gave the people the gift of music and when you're standing in the middle of a hot and dusty tent listening to that sound I'm pretty sure it's a sample of what heaven will be like.

Armed with a sharp rock and a little water we watched (and photographed) as the Himba ladies gave one another a trim. I wonder if they would be half as fascinated watching me flat iron my hair? Probably not.

The magic of touch

By our last work day at the village the kids had grown comfortable enough with us not to be shy at all about touch. When the songs had been sung, the stories told, and the faces painted, we were all just sort of hanging out and snapping pictures. If you were standing still there was a little one grabbing your hand to hold on each side. They would literally push each other out of the way to be the one to touch you! It was absolutely sweet to see the smile that just holding my hand would bring. I wished for more hands.

This resonates with me as a reminder of how important it is to give the children in our lives the gift of touch. As long as my boy will allow me to I will be holding his hand, kissing his cheeks, wrapping my arms around him, and rubbing his back till he falls asleep. And beyond my own child, offering a hand to hold to a little one can truly be a gift for the both of us. Just try it. Hold the hand of a child and try not to smile, it's pretty much impossible.

A comfy Sunday.

Home made beef crock pot soup is the ultimate comfy food for me. I got up early to prep it for after church this morning. Walking in the house to that smell feels like a warm blanket or a favorite pair of slippers. If only the weather outside matched the meal. I'm officially ready for fall and highs below 80.

I'm looking forward to this coming week. Pumpkin carving, lower temps, kids in costumes. E will make the cutest spider man ever. Hope your weekend was happy.

Walking in Okorosave

We woke up to the most amazing sky the last work day in Okorosave. I could tell this day would be a special one from the start. Knowing this would be the last full day spent in the village saddened my heart but I was also excited to share with the children the story and activities I'd prepared.

Doesn't this sky just look like God is shinning His glory down on the town?
Nothing short of stunning.

The "girl work" on the structure (which didn't include welding and climbing up on shaky scaffolding) was already done so the ladies decided to take a walk through the village to see some of these homes up close. The kids came out of their huts to walk with us, and of course pose for a shot or two.

Check out this termite mound! These things were everywhere and sometimes up to 10 feet tall! Don't mind my less than fashion-ista attire. Comfort and dress code were the priority. The best surprise was it's too dry to sweat!

While we were strolling through the village this little QT was sent out by his mama wrapped in hand made goods for sale. Now that's good marketing!

Not only did I fall in love with these kids but I also gained a bond with every member of our team that went. Sharing something like this is beyond words. These ladies all became my friends, my 2nd and 3rd moms, and my nurse (when I twisted my ankle and got sick.) Not to discount the men, the kind of giving and selfless men that could handle a group of 9 women for 2 weeks! : )

I will cherish each of them and this experience we shared for the rest of my life.

Are you bored with my Africa pics yet? I hope not because I'm only about 1/2 way through the trip. And I love sharing them. Every time I look through the pics for another post I'm taken back and it does my heart good.

Day 2 at the village

Our second day at the village was pure joy. The ice had been broken and we now had a better idea of what we were doing which helped. We had the creation story told by a 72 year old clown, we did a fun craft, more hopscotch, and by the end of the day the village girls started braiding some of our ladies hair. They were fascinated to touch the different textures of hair and were surprised that one of our team mates (who's parents come from Fiji) was American, her darker skin and hair was not what they expected. We all marveled in the beauty of our differences. Please marvel along with me at the beauty in these faces. My heart swells with every one.

Okorosave Day 1

The first day at the village was awesome, no, better than awesome. Mud huts, children shepherds, cooking over a fire, this is how they live and it's amazing. We arrived in the morning and went right to work on the church structure. The tree that sits in the center of the village and has acted as the "church" eventually shaded a few of the Himba women and their children. When the school kids started to filter in in the afternoon those of us assigned to work with them put down our paint brushes and headed to the tree. I love kids, and I was missing mine like crazy so I was overjoyed that I was given this assignment. We had a translator and that helped immensely. We sang a couple songs, taught them hopscotch which was a HUGE hit, then told the story of David and Goliath. It was hard to tell if they really understood the story but even if they didn't fully get it I'm sure they got the love that was oozing out of us. I fell in love with these faces from the moment I laid eyes on them. God's love for them was full and overflowing in us.

I love looking at these. It makes me smile to remember their expressions, their voices, their giggles and smiles. These photos will warm my heart for years to come. Day 2 was even better! The ice had been broken and they really loved posing for my camera, can't wait to share those.

Hope you've all had a blessed week. I'm still feeling like I need a good solid 12 hours of sleep but a busy weekend planned ahead.

Arriving in Opuwo

After two days of flight and a stay over in Johannesburg we made a 6 hour drive to Tsumeb where we met with the missionaries we would be working with. We got acquainted, unpacked all of the supplies and gifts we'd brought along, ate pizza, and then we were given more details about the days ahead. The first bit of information they shared was that we had a 9 hour drive ahead of us the next day...I nearly broke down right then and there. I was so exhausted. It was in that moment I realized this trip was going to do more than just take me out of my comfort zone but also, perhaps, be straight up painful. I collapsed in the bed at their home that night and as the tears fell to my pillow I prayed a desperate prayer for peace. The restful sleep and God's answer to prayer gave me the strength to endure that last leg of the trip. When we finally arrived in Opuwo I knew immediately that it was worth the journey. It was like traveling back in time. The local women in traditional dress were simply stunning. We snapped pictures from behind the tinted windows inside the van having been warned not to take photos with out asking permission first.

Yesterday was our team presentation for the church. I put together a slide show for it and we each shared some of our personal experiences from the trip. It was so great to see my "Africa Family" and take a moment to reflect on the amazing moments of our journey. As you can imagine we all grew quite close and as much as you want to share what it's like pictures and stories only scratch the surface.

....Next we travel to the village.

A taste of Namibia

I have been sorting and processing pictures from the trip to Namibia all week. I'm putting together a slide show for church on Sunday and I have not only the near 2k pics I took but I also have the SD cards of a few other team members to add in.

Here is just a little taste of the trip. I have so much I want to share but this week has been about catching up on sleep and getting this slide show together.

Back and in recovery

I arrived home late Saturday night after 2 days of travel home from Namibia. I've been in recovery mode since. I have much to share about the experience once my body returns to some sense of normalcy. It's crazy what a toll the travel has taken on me but I'm taking today to just veg and sleep and chug Imodium AD. Missed ya'll!

Is it just me or is there an awful lot of negative space and melancholy moods in this grouping? Also a touch of decadence. Perhaps there is some insight found to my focus this week in this beautiful collection.

I just said goodbye to my sweet E for 2 weeks. The term basket case has reached a new definition as I balled my eyes out in the parking lot of Starbucks. I'm pretty sure there should be a law against driving and crying. I knew that would be the hardest part of the journey that for me starts on Saturday. Being away from my son with no guaranteed way to hear his voice for two weeks. My mind knows all the reasons it's going to be ok but my heart still hurts.

Namibia here I come...

Tomorrow morning I will be heading on an adventure like nothing I've embarked on before. I'll be boarding a plane with 13 members of my church family and taking the 2 day flight to Namibia. We've been praying, raising funds, praying, preparing, working, and praying for nearly a year and I can't believe the day is here!!! When the opportunity was first announced I thought to myself "trip of a lifetime" but didn't dwell seriously about it knowing it would be impossible to leave my son with anyone for that long and go that far away. When I mentioned to my mom how amazing I thought it would be to go she didn't bat an eye and offered to take care of E so I could. God made a way. Did I mention how AWESOME my folks are?

The purpose of this trip is to work and witness. We will be putting up a structure for several churches in the area to use as well as working with the local missionaries in childrens ministry. I completely expect to see lives changed, mine included. God's hand has been so visible and felt through all the efforts made to make this trip happen. There is no doubt that He has something beautiful planned and I am eager to be apart of it.

I won't lie... I started to freak out last week as the date I've anticipated drew closer and closer. This trip is scary for a few reasons; I've never been out of America except to Mexico and I spent most of that trip in a luxury resort, I am a girl that likes her comforts and I'm pretty sure there won't be a Starbucks in Okorosave, I don't like big bugs, and being away from my son for 2 weeks has my heart breaking. But last Sunday the congregation at church had a send-off service for us and in that God gave me the peace I needed. I will never leave you nor forsake you. Hebrews 13:5. Of course I am going to miss my loved ones like crazy, but the two weeks will fly by and what a story (and photos I hope) I will have to share when I return!

For all of you that pray, I ask that you do so for our group. Pray for safe travel and no illness or injuries and all of that...but mostly please pray that we don't let fear or discomfort stand in the way of His work. Pray that we are able to open our hearts to Him and the people of Namibia and have a truly divine experience. I'm not one to hide my faith but there's always the chance I'll turn someone off when I speak openly about it. I'm often afraid of being perceived as "preachy." I saw this on pinterest the other day and I just really couldn't put it better myself:

Tide Pools

On our way out of Fort Bragg we pulled off a small vista point that Amy advised us about to hike down to some of the best tide pools I've ever seen. Huge anemones, hermit crabs, starfish, we even caught a glimpse of some seals and a red crab working on a clam shell (you can see him in my reflection photo.) It was the icing on the cake for this awesome trip.

I promise this is the last of my Fort Bragg photos. Thanks for enduring. :) Needless to say I love this place and we will be returning!

Now I make no apologies for the insane number of posts coming about my trip to Africa which I leave for in ONE WEEK!

Glass Beach

Day 3 of the Fort Bragg trip we visited Glass Beach.

Pretty neat that years of trash has been turned into a treasure hunt.

We bagged up our treasures and headed back to camp for a walk along the beach. I'm so glad my boy is such an ocean lover like his mama. Did I mention that we were blessed to see whales in the distance from our campsite the entire weekend? Spotting whale tales and blowhole spray was beyond amazing!

We ended the day with a firewood band concert!!

Fort Bragg Day 2

After a yummy breakfast we hit the road into town and caught a classic car show, took the obligatory tattoo museum photo, and stocked up on some landshark. Highly appropriate find since we told all the kids that landsharks lived in Fort Bragg and like to feed on whinny children. Muahahaha!

The sun set on our first day at Fort Bragg so we sat on the sand and watched it leave. Millie's long braid was making a perfect silhouette as she twirled and C-dawg showed us her running man skills. The temps dropped and we bundled up for campfire and roasting marshmallows. *sigh* I am ready to go back.

The Labor Day beach camping trip to Fort Bragg was so full of beauty and laughter my camera was working overtime...that and the pressure of being the "official trip photographer."
My friends didn't even bother bringing their camera's so I couldn't let them down!
As a result I took A LOT of photo's.
My apologies in advance for the family vacation slide show-esque posts...
I'll try to spare you a 500 photo post and break it up a bit.

After the 5 hour drive we arrived to the campground and the sun was shining!
It was pretty much the only fog free day we had so I'm glad we spent the rest of the day getting our fill of vitamin D. The kids found a little hole in the sand and that became hours of entertainment. Nothing like a sandy beach and a group of fun loving kids
to bring out the adorable smiles. :)

The dad's joined in the fun and of course became human jungle gyms.

C-dawg hopped on the pile and ended up with a face full of sand. LOL!!!

We got back last night from a 4 day beach camping trip to Fort Bragg with friends. An amazing time had by all, wonderful memories made, magical moments captured, I can't wait to load the pics to share. Today I'm having a really hard time waking up. Good thing I can do my job in my sleep. lol!

I thought we'd made it through summer with out a cold but alas...it snuck up on us and it's a doozey! I have to kick this thing before we go camping this weekend so I'm doing everything I know to do to ensure it's a short lived illness. So this has been my nest of illness for most of the day. I did get a nice surprise this morning when one of my photos was featured on the Mortal Muses blog. :)

Ahhhh weekend. It's only Friday afternoon and already you've been so good to me! Catching up with dear friends, eating delicious food (not on my diet,) an exciting lesson in the wonders of our local library for E followed by a quick nap snuggled up in his bed, and finally a fun discovery on my camera. I admit. I'm pretty green when it comes to most of the features on this thing. I was trying to get my remote to work on it to take a selfie since I actually did my hair and make up today and discovered the Multiple Exposure option. HELLO FUN! :)

Once E wakes up from his nap and Devin swings by after work it'll be time to jump in the pool. It's hot out today and I'm milking every last minute of summer till she takes off leaving me longing for her return. Happy weekend all!

August Break Day 24

I shot these last night with my new lens. I really can't wait to take it somewhere crowded, full of people or animals I can capture with out their knowledge. For now we're just getting to know one another. This trike was something I snatched up from Devin's folks discard pile when they moved. We used to have two of these at the church when I was a kid and I remember riding them till I was way too big and had no business being on them. I liked both of these shots for different reasons and processed them in totally different styles but couldn't choose one to post so... I'm posting both. One with a nostalgic and vintage feel, one with a gritty feel focusing on the texture. Just another aspect to my eclectic taste. Happy Wednesday!

I'm pretty stoked :) to see my photo included in today's collection at
The Maternal Lens Blog. I don't why I'm such a sucker for comments and seeing my work on other blogs. I've always been one that needs that positive feedback (aka ego strokes) from others for validation. Some people are just geared that way I suppose. Today was the first day in a long time I've had what I like to call "guilt free me time." Elijah was at preschool and I was off work so for 4 hours and some change I got to do what I wanted with out having to ask someone (usually my folks) to watch him. I spent this first Friday hitting a yard sale (total bust) and getting a much needed massage. I love massage. I'm pretty sure heaven will be full of massage tables and chocolate. My version anyway. ;)

Something told me to bring my camera with me today, so I did. I was stopped at "the ding ding's" (my son's name for the train signal) when I saw this scene next to me. Bob's bar is the oldest bar in old town Elk Grove, he was out sweeping the front getting ready for his morning patrons, at 6:40am. He blew out a puff of smoke from his cig just as I hit the shutter. Thank you bartender!

Some of you may remember the photo shoot I did with Carmen last year. Well it took nearly a year for us to get it together and do it again and it was kind of last min but we did it and had fun!

Here are some of my favorites

My main request of Carmen was she wear her hair natural, curly, and BIG. Of course she doesn't like to wear her hair like this, it's heavy, hot, and in the way. But I LOVE IT! I LOVE BIG HAIR, of course, I don't have it. Just another case of grass is always greener I suppose. At least she gave me my wish and let me photograph her hair in all it's big glory.

Since our last shoot Carmen has gone to ANTM casting call, Fingers crossed for you girl! The camera loves you!

August Break Day 15

First day of preschool. BIG DAY! I took time off work to be the one to drop him off and pick him up. He did great, I on the other hand had to bolt for the door and put my sunglasses on while the waterworks started. When I picked him up he asked for a Starbucks vanilla milk and said his favorite part was the puzzles because there was a train and fishy puzzle. I wish I could pick him up every day to get treats and hear the run down of his day while it's still fresh. I'll get to on Fridays, those will be extra special days.

A new stage, a new step, my boy is so big, and I couldn't be more proud. :)

I love his choice of lunchbox too. He's already so cool.

My new baby

I finally hit the "buy" button and purchased a new camera. I upgraded to a Nikon 7000 and she arrived over the weekend but I only just took her on a little outing tonight. E and I went for a walk to the park so I could get to know her a little bit. She's beautiful, and as most women...complicated! Much to learn but I'm super excited!

Sweet faces

What is it about kids and sweets? Ice cream, cookies, candy....they always manage to make a mess with sweet food. You rarely see a kid with cooked carrots smeared across their face but give them a cupcake and the frosting ends up in their hair. I'm not complaining, makes for fun pictures! :)

Last weekend I had the pleasure of a senior portrait session with a young man from our Church. Jeff's mom challenged me to get a genuine smile out of him, evidently he doesn't give them frequently when in front of the camera. It took a little while but eventually we found that smile, and it's quite lovely.

These are a few of my favorites:

I also had the added challenge of glasses. Not only the glare and reflections but his glasses tinted in the sunlight hiding his eyes. He agreed to take them off for a some shots without glasses and revealed a pair of STUNNING green eyes.

I love shooting in old Elk Grove. So many gritty backgrounds to up the "cool" element for a very cool guy.

I enjoyed strolling along and chit-chatting with Jeff. He's got a bright future and a wonderful family supporting him. Thanks for allowing me the opportunity to get to know you and capture this special time in your life.

7 hours of Shut Up!

Saturday I participated in an all day silent meditation ladies retreat held at my church. My interest in this was sparked when one of the amazing women in our ladies Bible study shared some of her experiences in the 3, 5, and even 10 day silent meditation retreats she's been on. In her sharing her discoveries during these retreats I found myself holding my breath and not exhaling till she was finished as I thought "I want that." I have such difficulty focusing in any sort of prayer or meditation time. I find my mind can't stay focused for any length of time, constantly running on random bunny trails, or I just fall asleep. I need to teach my brain to SHUT UP!! She felt led to put on an 8 hour retreat for those like me that had an interest in learning how to just Be Still And Know. Myself and seven ladies from our church showed up at 8 am with no coffee or food in our system ready and willing to experience something most of us had never tried before. She combined this silent meditation with a Daniel fast which is basically a vegan diet. My experience started off great, I didn't find it too painful to stay silent and I was having success with the techniques she provided. The real challenge was after we broke for lunch, my addiction to caffeine and going cold turkey resulted in a massive headache and I found that any time I got my mind to quiet I dozed off. It was frustrating and eventually torturous. When we had completed the 7th hour we gathered together to discuss our experiences and I was relieved to find that I wasn't the only one that found this process to be painful and frustrating but I was also encouraged by those that had done this sort of thing before and shared that the first time was extremely difficult but as with most things with practice it gets better and even easy eventually. Our society is so geared in the opposite direction. We are encouraged to go, go, go! We are constantly being entertained and bombarded with stimulation and information that when we ask our bodies to hold still and our minds to be quiet they are both so exhausted we just crash into sleep. Now the hard part for me will be making the time to keep this in practice. I want it though, I want to be able to sit still for hours on end with my mind focused on The One. So practice I will.

Sunday was full of visits. My aunt flew into town to stay with us from Washington and a dear friend from So Cal is in town with her baby girl that I'd never met. I ended up with a cherished group of friends and family over yesterday for lunch and swimming. Got to meet her gorgeous baby girl who has the most stunning blue eyes I think I've ever seen as the rest of the kids swam and played. It was a lovely afternoon. At one point my mom came outside to tell me I was missing a great photo op in the living room. My dad, my son, and two of his buddies on the floor playing with the train. I managed to sneak in and get the shot.

It's for sure my favorite one of the weekend.

Skinny Taste

Last Saturday night Devin and I made dinner as a "thank you" to my mom and dad for watching E during our date night. I'd been pinning a few recipies from this blog called Skinny Taste where Gina has taken some of our favorite foods and created lower cal/fat ways to make them. I picked out three that looked good and not only were all three pretty easy (I'm no chef) but they turned out really, really good! I've now created a LONG list of her recipies to try. If you're on WW she also includes the WW points for each recipie. Even if you're not trying to lose weight it's just wise to cut the sugar and butter down a bit and I promise you won't miss it.

These don't taste diet at all!

The three we tried were the Chicken Piccata , the Oven Roasted Cauliflower , and for dessert a Low Fat No Bake Strawberry Cheesecake. YUM! So good I had to share with all of you!

Weekend Wrap up

My friend and I took our boys to Exploratorium in San Francisco on Friday.
What a FUN place! It's a hands on science museum perfect for two 4 year old boys that want to touch and experience everything for themselves.
It was also perfect for two mom's tired of yelling
"Don't touch that!" I had fun experimenting and learned a few things too.

We all had a blast but we ran out of time before we'd even made it to the 2nd level so a trip back is a must. Next time go earlier, the traffic home was a bear!

Elijah and his buddy (who are often mistaken for brothers) were just too cute
and the sky lights and reflective glass provided so many photo opportunities...
I was having my own fun snapping away.

Last night Devin and I had a date night, we went to the Tower Theater and saw
The Tree of Life.

Woah.

From the previews I gathered that it was a story about a father and son relationship and outside of that the cinematography and cast was what drew me to it. This is not a film for everyone. It's difficult to follow, I spent much of the 2+ hours trying to figure out if it was too abstract to figure out or if I was too sober to enjoy it but then moments I did "get" would touch me and
the beauty on the screen would overwhelm me and I loved it again.
It was a frustrating and beautiful experience. Devin and I went to Tower cafe after wards for coffee dessert and discussion about the film. I love that he enjoys artistic and independent films that make you think and talk about hours and even days later.

We wrapped up the weekend at church this morning where our favorite southern gospel quartet Sons of Ligh t put on a wonderful and touching performance.
